ILN Statement

ILN Positions

We endorse peaceful, democratic and non-violent means of expression and political struggle of all communities without any discrimination.
We respect human dignity, protection of human rights and property rights and consider them inviolable.
We respect international law, conventions and resolutions of the United Nations which govern the conduct of states in the matters of war and peace.
We condemn killings, violence and aggression against non-combatant civilians by any state or non-state actors.
We urge both parties to agree to ceasefire, release of hostages, and adopt all possible measures for minimization of human loss and to ensure access to urgent humanitarian aid.

Islam & Liberty Network

Our mission is to advance the understanding of religious, political, and economic freedom for peace and prosperity in Muslim majority countries and beyond.

We were founded in 2011 to bring together researchers, academics, and public intellectuals to demonstrate the consistency of the universal values of religious, political and economic freedom with Islam. Our research outputs show that Islam is not just consistent with freedom; indeed Islam requires freedom.

Our annual programme includes an international conference, training workshops, and publishing articles, papers, podcasts and webinars which reach thousands of interested individuals.

Islam and Liberty Network was awarded Asia Liberty Award for 2020 for “establishing a Muslim case for free society” for its work in Asia and Middle East.

Legally the Islam & Liberty Network is registered as a Labuan foundation in Malaysia. It is governed by our international Council.

Thank you ILN for inspiring and motivating me to focus on the concept of liberty in Muslim-majority countries! After attending the 6th ILN Conference in Islamabad in 2018, I couldn't have imagined how that event may affect my future activities. I realized that something must change in my research career. Upon coming back home to Iran, I decided to make a plan regarding problems inside Muslim communities in Iran as far as liberty is concerned. After some consultations with my colleagues, I wrote a research proposal and started a series of researches in collaboration with some students. Many of the articles I wrote got published! I also attended 2 other ILN conferences as a speaker and I hope I can continue this way. I am really grateful for ILN and its powerful team for motivating me.

For many years the Islam and Liberty Network has been striving to restore the intellectual curiosity and openness to other cultures that was characteristic of Islam at the height of its golden age. The success of this endeavor is vital if we are to witness the emergence of a just, peaceful and truly global civilization, whose constituent elements retain their distinctive characteristics.

Having participated in Islam and Liberty Network (ILN) international conference in Mardin, Turkey, in the end of October, brought some optimism for me. I am convinced that ILN is a new hope for moderation force.

"ILN gave me a new and more important academic perspective i-e the value and responsible practice of liberty in our individual and collective life. It also inspired me to explore and promote the Muslim case of religious liberty. As an outcome of my association with ILN, I wrote two papers on various dimensions of religious freedom in the light of Islamic teachings and Prophetic traditions. I'm also committed to extend my knowledge further about the Muslim Case of Religious Freedom by writing my doctoral dissertation on one of the practical aspects of religious freedom."

I appreciate the network for accommodating thought-provoking and new ideas. It makes the network more academically vibrant, grounded, and liberal. Keep up with the excellent work and motivate budding scholars like me.

Founded in Istanbul in 2011 to bring together academics, researchers and intellectuals to demonstrate the consistency of the universal values of religious, economic and political freedom with Islam, ILN has a noteworthy record in terms of organizing a number of scientific, cultural and intellectual activities within a relatively short period of time. This is admirable for a young NGO which is just 12 years old to organize 9 international conferences in a number of Muslim countries including Morocco, Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia and Türkiye; conducting 3 summer workshops (Iran, Tunisia, Pakistan); publishing 3 important books on Islam, freedom and open markets; and releasing many webinars and podcasts on various issues.

9th International Islam & Liberty Conference

Pluralism, Democracy and Economic Development in Muslim Majority Countries

International Islam & Liberty Conference is the annual flagship event of Islam & Liberty Network (ILN) that is a two-day forum featuring keynote speeches, panel discussions, academic lectures, and presentations. ILN is organizing 9th International Conference on 27-28 October 2022 in the historic South-eastern city of Mardin, Turkey hosted by Mardin Artuklu University. The main theme of this conference is “The Future of Democracy, Peace and Development in Muslim-majority nations” within the context of Muslim majority societies. The Conference will deliberate on the theoretical, historical, and contemporary challenges faced by these societies with a view to advance the ideas and institutions of a free society consistent with the contours of Islamic faith. The papers will be subsequently published and widely disseminated.
